Railroadersthe exhibition and the catalogbreaks new ground for exhibitions of historical photographs and the genre of railroad books. Gary Johnson, president of the Chicago History Museum, warns museums with photographic collections to "take heed" when creating new shows, lest they rely on underdeveloped histories of the images they put on their walls. Authors of railroad books are, similarly cautioned to develop narratives of individuals and companies that bring to life in words as well as images the powerful industry and machinery they love so much.
Breaking new ground is not easy. But that is what John Gruber and his miniscule crew deliberately set about in creating this work. They recognized that the lives of individual railroaders make for compelling, universal stories, if enough time and trouble are taken to research them.
