DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
ONE OF THE most fascinating, and certainly among the crookedest railroads ever built, was the San Joaquin and Eastern. It was built in only 157 days in 1912 to furnish transportation for the construction of Big Creek, the largest hydro-electric project in the world at that time, located in the High Sierra northeasterly of Fresno, California.
Henry E. Huntington, whose vast Pacific Electric Railway interurban empire is well known, was also a principal stockholder of the Pacific Light & Power Company and the man behind Big Creek.
The railroad continued in service through the Twenties as the Southern California Edison Company took over Huntington's operation and expanded and enlarged it several times over. At one time, Big Creek supplied nearly 90 percent of the electric power used in Southern California and continues today as a vital part of the Edison system.
Here is a story of rugged men doing a nearly impossible job. Author Hank Johnston has done exhaustive research, fully documented, and the material includes facts and illustrations from official Edison Company files.
