LIKE MANY PREDICTIONS, Old Solomon Pinder's was half right. Mile for mile, the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway, which island-hopped from the mainland tip of the state to Key West, was the most costly shortline in United States railroad history. As for killing men, its construction took several hundred workers' lives and hastened to death, through sheer strain, all the most important individuals connected with it.
Yet it was a masterpiece of railroad engineering. For twenty-three years, "many a Conch man" did thrill to the engine's whistle in Key West. Through disasters of finance, wind, and flood, the Overseas Railroad -as it was best known - kept going until it met the mightiest fury of them all.
This story begins with the fatal Labor Day hurricane of Monday, September 2, 1935 .. . the day the Key West Extension "died at sea."
