Railroad passenger service in the general vicinity of Bellows Falls came to an end in September, 1966, 118 years after its beginning.
To those of us who once rode on trains they will always be a vivid memory. When we are gone, their history will merge with that of several other modes of travel we can remember that are now practically gone, such as the horse and carriage, the stage coach, and the interurban electric cars.
Railroad travel, reaching its heyday about 1920, had seemed so permanent a part of our economy and way of life for so long that now its passing away makes us wonder if indeed anything is permanent, or what the future may hold.
I will give you some of the standard historical material on railroads around here, and my memories of the years when we used them. Among the latter you will find nothing spectacular or unusual.
I was never in a wreck; I never walked miles through the snow at night from a stalled train to find the nearest farm house. I never suffered the loss of a prize-winning cow killed by a train at a crossing on the way home from the fair, an experience a neighbor of ours once had. Though I "earned my passage" several years in Model T Fords, I never helped fill a wood-burning engine's tender with chunks as Goy. roller of Vermont once did. Tr); never had a chance to do anything sporty or heroic. But my memories are vivid and cherished, maybe somewhat romantic and subjective--but probably so are yours. Ours are the stuff of personal history, reflecting the essence of the life of those times and their effect on us. hence they are valid, if held within the truth to the best of our abilities.
