INTRODUCTION
The author has, for many years, enjoyed the avocation of railroad study and documentation. Often, too much time was consumed in this endeavor, by the less pleasant task of digging through Poors Manuals and Official Guides etc., in an attempt to isolate a date or location or some other fact relating to the particular railroad under study. Many times, without a known date, many different volumes of the same source need be employed, just to find the correct era in which to begin looking. William Edson's "Railroad Names" was always a great help, but only for common carriers. In desperation, it was decided to create something to supplement "Names"; based on Poors, Official Guides, and the author's own card files on industrials, loggers, etc. Initially, a computer database was created from only a few of the most used sources. This compilation was found to be of such aid in the research that more and more reference sources were gradually added to it. At this stage, it was envisioned only to be used by the author in his work and as such was created as "thumbnail" sketches which would either answer questions directly or at least point the way toward further study.
The first criteria considered for inclusion, was the definition of what kinds of railroad operations should be accepted. Obviously, all common carriers and switching companies should. All industrial operations, if operated by their own locomotive, belonged. Coal mines posed a unique situation and it was arbitrarily decided to include them if they operated "above ground" trackage with other than the underground electric "mules".
Electric railroads and Street Car lines were the next consideration. They were included if they hauled freight (LCL or otherwise). Paper railroads were usually excluded, unless they laid track and owned a locomotive even if not operated.
Gradually, this project took on a life of its own and other projects began to be moved to secondary importance. By the time a halt was called, 153 reference books had been pursued and 31,084 separate entries generated. Even with tight fonts and small character size, a number of volumes would be needed if the database were ever to be converted to hard copy. The writer was faced with a dilemma. Were there enough others to which this information would be of value to warrant publication?
The only logical option seemed Desktop Publishing. In this manner, small quantities were feasible and costs manageable. The result follows.
