THE COVER
Resplendent in the most recent style of Southern Pacific paint which she wore to the end is Alco PA-3 06030, photographed at Oakland, Cal., by RMC's Bob Mohowski. At one time the Espee operated 66 Alco passenger units including those built for the system's Texas & New Orleans and St. Louis-Southwestern lines. The PA/PB roster even included PB-3 boosters, unique to Southern Pacific. By the early 1960's, some had been retired, a fate which encompassed the entire fleet before the end of that decade. Though several SP steam locomotives were fortunately preserved, not one of the PA's or PB's was spared, and today they exist only in vivid memories, historical records ... and on film. Save the still-running D&H PA's, and two former ATSF units which have yet to be cut up in the Chicago area, the era of Alco passenger cabs is unhappily drawing to a close.
