THE COVER

NOTES ON AN OLD TIMETABLE
WITH THE fall season here, model railroading is taking off full swing and indications are it will be the best year in some time. Hobby retailerss are stocking up on new items like they haven't done in some time. Well worth a look-see. There are also loads of model club shows, regional conventions, fan trips, and train collecting meets around the country. They're great for getting the old enthusiasm fired up
As this is written, we're pushing hard to get everything wrapped up before heading for the NMRA's big blast in Vancouver. With a little bit of luck in timing we should bring back a full report on the activities in B. C. in time for the November issue.
We also hope by next month to take the wraps off another project we've been working on for many, many months. It's the latest in our book line and includes a lot of material we feel will be welcomed by the modelrail. Watch the announcement in RMC next month, or surely December.
We've packed in some interesting plans this month: Alco's giant 5500 hp. Century 855, Baldwin's delightful A and B freight units, and that long Magor Car Company pulpwood car, which has already been made into an excellent Ambroid kit. There also are plans in all of the currently popular scales for the D&H No. 10 single truck caboose with a trainload of detail photos plus an announcement of a contest on building the car. This car was used in organizing the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the BRT is the sponsor of the contest, working through NMRA. Incidently, some comments by BRT president Charles Luna in regards to treatment of railfans and model railroaders by both the railroads and railroad men is provocative. Much of what Luna says is all too true though it is also true that railfans have at times endangered themselves on railroad property and at other times have practically walked off with complete locomotives. We do agree that the railroads have not really tapped the fans as a valuable ally and public relations tool. Considering the many problems faced by the carriers, it should be worth their while to do so.
