OLD TIMETABLE
WITH THE New York World's Fair again reopening, the railroad modeler will have another great opportunity to look over some great model displays even though railroads and model railroading hasn't been given the prominance at the Fair that it rightfully should have.
Probably the biggest lesson that can be learned by the model rail is the old item of giving one's home layout the environment that will set it off and so give it its greatest appeal. Sure, we don't mind climbing down a bunch of rickety and steep steps into a dusty, dank, and dark basement. And we're used to banging our heads on low beams. And we don't really mind throwing our coat onto a sofa that has the stuffing oozing out and which is loaded down with cat hair. And who cares about the old beer and coke cans, cigarette cans, and other accumulated trash. Once we see that old railroad and the first loco growls off down the line, we're oblivious to all else.
But how would you feel stepping into the General Motors exhibit or the Better Living or Long Island Rail Road, or any other similar display at the Fair, and have to cope with those same problems. Would you really like to climb down rickety stairs, conk your head on a beam, and put up with the other conditions common to the average model pike, while visiting GM's pavilion?
So, once again we'll suggest that it isn't difficult to put up 2x4's and wall board. Nor is it hard to put up ceiling tile and asphalt or vinyl floor tile. Air conditioning units and humidifiers can make the old train room a delight all year round, and money invested in good lighting will repay itself many times over.
