NOTES ON AN OLD TIMETABLE
WE'VE filled this Special ChristIssue of RMC with a trainload of specials, including our Annual RMC Train Set Directory which once again lists some 150 different train sets in all of the popular scales and gauges. Changes are plentiful this year, there are loads of new items with promise of even more to come, and we'd say the overall quality has gone up with some minor price increases.
Besides the superb Ektachrome cover photo by John Allen, you'll find six more full color photos on pages 19 and 54 of this issue. Aside from Don Wallworth's Erie Depot 1905 painting which appeared as the center spread of last year's December issue this marks the first editorial use of full process color on our inside pages. Full four-color process printing by deep etch lithography is expensive but with more readers and greater advertising support, perhaps we'll be able to do it more often. So please mention RMC whenever writing advertisers.
Many readers have commented on the fact that our September issue containing Sharpe Delaney's Pacific . Electric feature in Watts broke just about the same time as the race riots in Watts. The situation left us feeling just a bit uneasy. It brought forth questions, such as why did only one Negro register for the NMRA convention in Vancouver? Perhaps the Negro is totally disinterested in model railroading as a hobby.
On the other hand, perhaps many Negroes do enjoy model railroading. Maybe they need a bit of encouragement in attending organized railmodel activities and assurance that they won't be turned down at the hotel desk when applying for rooms or in the dining room when hungry.
