INTRODUCTION
Portrayal of the breadth and excellence of the photographic collection of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society was one purpose of this book, along with contributing to the record of railroad history. We have deliberately selected photos which illustrate the extent of the archives in era, geography, railroad, and subject matter. Although nearly everyone has favorite regions or subjects, it seemed to us essential that this first book reflect the scope of the collection.
Within that range, we have somewhat arbitrarily made six subject divisions, as shown in the Table of Contents, focusing on steam, diesel, and other motive power, on passenger and freight rolling stock and trains, and on structures. These topics address much though not all of the subject matter of the archives, now housed at Sacramento, Calif.; the constraints of space dictated an extemely limited selection. The photos we have chosen do address a very broad period of railroad history, essentially 150 years, spanning from the oldest locomotive shown here, which was built in 1846, until the present day.
It must also be said that these photos were not intended to be typical or representative of the content of the collection. Although there are 350,000 or more images to choose from, the collection is at present much stronger on 19th-century and early 20th-century subjects. This has come about in part because of the manner in which an archive such as this is developed. Collections donated to the Society are usually gained upon the death of an individual. Members and friends who have photographed more recent eras are fortunately still with us. But the collection is becoming more modern, in part as members acquire the habit of regularly sending duplicate images of their current photography for the archives.
For more than 150 years, railroads have been an important part of the life and landscape of North America. An extensive photographic record of these railroads exists, as this book shows, for every part of the country, over a broad span of time. Many individual railroads are represented.

But this is much more than a collection of photographs. Extensive and informative captions bring to life the varied images of locomotives, rolling stock, trains and structures. Diesel locomotives down to the present day are included along with 100 years of steam locomotive history; the same is true for passenger cars and freight cars.
