A feast for the eyes. That's how I'd describe fall in the Northeast. Whether the fall foliage is having a good year, or a so-so year, there is always a varied palette of colors and textures that sharply define this region. September usually features abundant sunshine and blue skies. By the time October rolls around, the weather begins to change. Clouds become more common. Sometimes the first frost doesn't come until well into the month, even in northern New England. Other years, it comes early. Whatever the case, there is a bit of a snap in the air, and a quality to the morning light that is unsurpassed. The combination of this early light with fog and other seasonal atmospheric conditions can produce memorable photos. Above all, fall is not like the endless days of summer. It is fleeting, always changing and therefore precious.
In celebration of the time of year, we've put together what might very well be the best selection of Northeastern fall images we've ever assembled. The season lends itself to the all-gallery style we've chosen for this issue. Everything from Olev Taremae's shot of the earliest hints of color on Cape Cod, to George Melvin's explosive Maples in Maine on the rear cover to Tim Doherty's view of the rusty oaks on Guilford's West End to Bob Barnett's image of the P&W against a dank and colorless December landscape in Rhode Island. It's all here.
Fall Gallery
This is perhaps the very best selection of fall images we have ever assembled, with explosive fall color from cover-to-cover. From classic to contemporary, from the last warm days of September to the cold days of December, we've got autumn in the Northeast covered.
