JUST AS the first transcontinental railroads drew their resources --in both personnel and materials --from many different and far-flung sources, so this issue has assembled its material from a myriad of contributors. Especially helpful were the Public Relations Departments of the Association of American Railroads, Union Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Company. Most of the old historic photographs--and some of the text material-came from these three sources.
Sacramento-based member Al Papp produced monumental accounts of both the Southern Pacific's steam locomotives and passenger operations on short notice. Many of the present-day scenes of the first "transcon" route came from the camera of Windy City member Doug Wornom. To these members go our special appreciation.
On-the-scene ceremonies of the Last Spike Ceremony at Promentory are still being planned by the Golden Spike Centennial Celebration Commission. About a mile of track is being relaid on the original roadbed through Promentory, a museum is being constructed, and a series of celebrations is being scheduled for the period before, during and after the centennial date of May 10, 1969. Their finalization will be announced within the next few months.
