ALTHOUGH THE editor has never been west of the Mississippi, he has held a special affection for slim gauge carriers ever since cutting his teeth on the East Broad Top Railroad's three-foot gauge rails out of Mount Union, Pennsylvania, in the early 1910s. When a collection of manuscripts devoted to these narrow gaugers was noted in the editorial files, it seemed only natural to combine them into a single issue in an effort to portray a small portion of the important role these railroads played in the development of American railroads--and tourist carriers.
Our lead article on the Edaville Railroad was recently uncovered in the files of Stanley Bradley, former RRE national president. It was written almost eight years ago by the late Cyrus Homer, Jr., a director of the railroad. Cy, a member of the New England Division since the RRE's incorporation in 1935, died on June 28, 1966. Although a few portions of his article are now dated, we are sure our long-time members will enjoy his description of the dimunitive railroad he knew and loved from the day the first rail was spiked in place.
