Railroad Encyclopedia, The 2001 Hard Cover w/ dust jacket 192 Pages Indexed
Hundreds of Color and Black & White Photos, Technical data on locomotives, Detailed Index, Tables of the worlds speed records for steam, diesel and electric traction, & More.
Railroads exercise a hold over the imagination like no other form of transport, and the steam locomotive is surely the most emotive of man's mechanical creations. The sight of one of the Goliaths of the Union Pacific or the Norfolk & Western hauling over 3000 tons up steep grades is just one of the dramatic images recalled by The Railroad Encyclopedia.
The largest section of the book is devoted to motive power, starting with Stephenson's tiny Rocket, which is the first locomotive most people can name. Built in 1829 it was quickly superseded by ever more sophisticated machines, growing in size and power until steam reached its zenith in the 1940s and began to be eclipsed by diesels. Amongst the dozens of locomotive types described in detail are the legendary Pennsylvania K4 Pacifics, the Union Pacific's Class 9000 4-12-2s - the longest non-articulated locomotives ever built -the UP Challengers and FEF 800s, as well as some of the most influential designs in Europe and Australia.
`The World of Rail' looks at such diverse and fascinating subjects as the building of the Canadian Pacific - the railway that forged a nation, railways in the cinema and the role of the armored train in war..
Worldwide railroads are undergoing a renaissance to reduce road traffic-induced pollution and congestion. `Towards the Future' looks at high speed trains, urban metros, Maglev experiments and other advances that will secure for railroads, a growing role in the 21st century.
