Its business district is only 69 to 199 feet above sea level, covering 31.9 square miles, and is the third largest city in Massachusetts. Incorporated as a town in 1641, it suffered a major fire in 1675, but was quickly rebuilt. With the establishment of the United States Arsenal there in 1777, it became a very important source of supplies for the Continental Army. In 1852, Springfield became a city and grew rapidly after the Civil War. With an excellent labor market, new factories and industries moved in to start the  Big Business era for the City.
