Introduction
The city of Springfield in Hampden County is situated on the east bank of the Connecticut River about 95 miles west of Boston and 134 miles northeast of New York City. Its business district is only 69 to 199 feet above sea level, covering 31.9 square miles, and is the third largest city in Massachusetts. It had a population of over 10,900 in 1840, 149,000 by 1940 and increased to 174,463 in 1960.
Through the 1950s, its manufactured good included envelopes, plastics, firearms, motorcycles, radios, tires, gasoline pumps, oil burners and air-conditioning equipment. The first settlement was made across the river in 1636, but moved to a safer spot on the east bank of the Connecticut River to avoid conflicts with the Indians. Incorporated as a town in 1641, it suffered a major fire in 1675, but was quickly rebuilt. With the establishment of the United States Arsenal there in 1777, it became a very important source of supplies for the Continental Army. In 1852, Springfield became a city and grew rapidly after the Civil War. With an excellent labor market, new factories and industries moved in to start the Big Business era for the City. In 1927 and again in 1936, the city suffered serious flood damage from the Connecticut River.
