Railroad Books & Thesis Bibliography 1812-2003 Electric Ry Bk & RR Periodicals
Railroad Books and Thesis Bibliography 1812 - 2003 Electric Railway Book and Railroad Periodicals Index Addenda by Albert Eggerton Hard Cover 445 Pages
From the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society's Bulletin beginning in 1934 and continuing to 1970 in Worth Reading were listings of numerous published reports on many railroad subjects. Most have been indexed. After 1970 Worth Reading did not include them. However in 1970 PhD theses were listed, and these have been indexed. University Micro-films of Ann Arbor, Mich has copies of them available plus the university issuing the degree would have it in their library. The Guide to Railroad Historical Resources also included theses, but how complete they are is unknown.
This bibliography is the culmination of discussion that began about 1975 when John H. White Jr., Curator of Transportation at the Smithsonian, and others there discussed the potential merits. The lack of a suitable financial arrangement delayed the start until 1983 when an interested volunteer appeared at the Institution, Al Eggerton. His background was suitable for doing a fine job. Assisting during the early years was Geoffrey Germond, who contributed early ideas concerning the project and helped do initial research until he moved from Washington. They first tackled the 2000 railroad volumes owned by the Smithsonian. Then they proceeded into old second hand book dealer catalogs, primarily those of Owen Davies, the best railroad book dealer in the country. A catalog published by the Bureau of Railroad Economics, book reviews of the R.&L.H.S. and N.R.H.S. journals followed.
By 2001 much of the research had been completed, 4200 books having been listed. Tom Taber then joined the project with additional ideas for finding books and organizing the format.
As with many original intentions, as the work proceeded, so did the breadth of material that would be included. Besides steam railroads electric street and interurbans were added, mass transit, published reports, trade catalogs if in book form, theses, booklets of only 36 pages and sometimes less, and articles in periodicals not included in the Railroad Periodicals Index,.
Most but not all books, booklets, pamphlets, and reports published prior to 1912 are listed in Railway Economics - a Collective Catalogue of Books in Fourteen American Libraries. This was reviewed twice. This catalogue has more than 15,000 items produced by individuals, companies, mortgages, charters, reorganizations, courts, and state and federal legislatures and their commissions. Reports included in the Book and Thersius Bibliography are usually more than 32 pages. Railway Economics includes locations of these materials. At the rear is an index of all railroads which have material scattered through the catalogue. Anyone doing a thorough railroad research prior to 1912 should see this bibliography which is at all railroad specializing libraries.
