DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The painter holds a trump card over the photographer, being unbound by the tyrannies of time and place." So spoke the late David P. Morgan, gifted editor of Trains magazine. This book is about the artist who made railroading come to life in a way that no photographer ever could. It is about the lens of his mind, which could capture the perfect scene.
For fifty years Howard Fogg painted trains. It was all he wanted to do. His first real job was as an on-staff artist for Alco, promoting the new diesel power this onetime steam locomotive manufacturer was producing. Accordingly, Howard thought of himself as merely a hired illustrator. He who loved steam power was glorifying its replacement. The irony did not escape him.
But when railroad professionals and fans alike clamored for Howard to create pictures for them, to fulfill their own longings for that perfect scene, it became obvious that he had powers far beyond that of a mere illustrator. His own horizons raised, Howard Fogg launched a half-century career as a freelance artist. Fame followed, and soon there was not enough time to fulfill everybody's railroad fantasy.
This book contains over 180 timeless works by Howard Fogg. You'll find a preponderance of steam locomotives-big steam, the bigger the better. There's plenty of Colorado narrow gauge and some charming studies of the obscure and off-beat. Diesels too are included, larger than life. And, we take a look into the impish, effervescent personality of this man who loved people and trains in equal measure.
Critics will differ as to what constitutes greatness. We submit herewith for your consideration: Howard Fogg, artist.
