COVER
Caltrans and Amtrak teamed up to produce a real success story in passenger service, the Oakland-Bakersfield San Joaquins, with four daily trains in each direction. In March 1996 P32 2052 had the afternoon 715 westbound at Oakley (built as 501 in the Amtrak "Pepsi can" livery, the Caltrans-owned P32 was renumbered and repainted into the California colors). Steve Schmollinger looks at the operations of the San Joaquin, with a close look at the Stockton Sub, in his article beginning on page 34. Fuji Velvia by Steve Schmollinger.
