LIKE the arteries and veins of some complex creature, the red and blue lines on the Philadelphia Transportation Company map of Philadelphia blanket the entire area of the vast metropolis and its' environs; providing the vital blood of good transportatior so necessary to the way of life in a large urban center. It is because so many of the colored lines are just that and no more to many people; because of the lack of general knowledge of this, the largest streetcar operator on the North American continent, that members of the Philadelphia Chapter, National Railway. Historical Society have undertaken to prepare this publication. Its purpose is twofold; to acquaint the reader with the general makeup of the system, and to point out some of the peculiarities that have existed even during the PTO's comparatively short tenure of office.
The PTC, as it is commonly known to all Philadelphians, stems only from January 1, 1940 when it was formed to take over the operation of the old Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company. Modernization of rolling stock and more efficient management were two of the main reasons for its formation. It is only the period 1940 to 1954 with which this booklet deals, presenting a general story of operations during this time through pictures.
The PTC, as of December 31, 1954, operated 1590 streetcars over 486 miles of track, as well as 541 rapid transit cars over 77 track miles. In addition, approximately 1000 buses and 159 trolley coaches served 45 routes, most of which had far lighter traffic densities than the rail lines. 12,058 employees in all categories kept the system running smoothly. This is big business, just how big even few Philadelphians realize. From the above figures it is easy to note that, as when taken over by PTC, the system is still basically a rail operation. While it is the high speed lines which provide the trunk lines of Philadelphia transit, it is the car lines which provide the basic feeder operation, and supply the most heavily traveled routes in areas not directly served by rapid transit.
