We hope that this first edition of "Rail Fan's Directory will meet with your approval and that you will find much use for it in the year ahead. Take it with you wherever you travel. You will find many places of interest geographically arranged, so that when you are in the neighborhood you can visit them. You will be able to contact fans with interests similar to yours, and you may find just the item you need in the advertising and want ads. Please mention RFD '64 when contacting fans or firms.
As some of you know, RFD'64 has been nearly two years in the making, and even though it is completed, it is not nearly as complete as we had hoped. We mailed out over 10,000 blanks, we feel there must be many times this number of Railfans. It only takes a minute to fill in the blank and return it, and a 5C stamp is the only cost to the fan. He is not obligated to buy a thing by listing his name. Neither is a club, museum or dealer or manufacturer obligated or charged for the one line listing in the geographical Directory section. Maybe you, the reader can tell us why so few railfans replied, especially in view of the much better response we recieved from traction fans for TFD'64? Is it that the traction fans are closer bound to each other, and feel that they are a minority group, and must stay together? Or is it that the 2 previous editions of TFD have helped build it up? The answer is with you the reader. If you like RFD'64, and want a better one each year, tell your friends to be sure to write for a listing blank (beginning with the 1965 edition listings will not have to be renewed each year, but of course, can be changed or eliminated as your interests change). Tell the dealers, manufacturers, clubs, etc. that you know, how much you use RFD and how much benefit they would receive with a Free listing (and an ad, of course). Do it now--while you are thinking of it.
We would like RFD'65 to contain thousands of names of fans, firms and clubs, etc. We want it to contain hundreds of ads, picturing every item you can buy for the enjoyment of your hobby. We would like to review every new item manufactured or every book or publication printed this year. We do not expect 100% results, but we feel that we can do much better than this first publication, but it will take 100% co-operation of the fans and firms who have started with us. (We listed about 95% of all firms and publishers in the Traction field in our 1962 Traction Fan's Directory, and the advertisers claim wonderous results per dollar spent--most of them state it was their best advertising investment). The nearer we can come to 100% of the railfans, the better it will be for all those who participate in the publication.
Our ambition is to publish an annual Railfans Directory as nearly complete as possible, which could be used as a master catalog, for dealers as well as the fans. From this "master" listing of all interests; we would like to publish smaller specialized directories for Traction Fans, Narrow Gauge Fans, Live Steam Fans, Tinplate Fans, 0 Scale Fans, etc. The advertising rates in the big monthly magazines do not allow the small producer of items wanted desperately by these smaller specialized groups to bring his complete story to his customers each month, but the extremely low price
of advertising in RFD, TFD, and the others that we hope are to come; allows even the smallest producer to present his story for an entire year for about 1/10th the cost of one monthly insertion. And his geographical listing is enlarged at no extra cost, plus he can have his item reviewed at only his cost of the said item.
In this issue, we have tried to keep reading to a minimum, and photos to a maximum--maybe you would like it the other way; maybe you don't like maps; maybe you want more maps--let us know what you want, we will supply to the best of our ability the features you let us know are wanted.

We appreciate those who sent their club and museum publications and photos. We used as much as possible with the quality being uppermost in our selection of photos.
