INTRODUCTION
After several years of work on Volume One and Two of Rail Canada it is fitting that we cover Canada's first transcontinental railway, The Canadian Pacific. Why it was not the first railway covered we will leave unstated. What follows is what we believe to be the most complete graphic representation of the diesel motive power of any railway in North America.
From our first research efforts in 1973 came Volume One covering The Canadian National, followed by Volume Two which covered many of the mining and industrial feeder lines across Canada, plus the smaller class one regional railways like B.C. Rail, Ontario Northland, Algoma Central and the Quebec North Shore and Labrador and others.
Volume Three of Rail Canada is a detailed graphic and photo record of all the diesel motive power operated on the C.P.R., as close to 100% that the information available permitted the author to come, we think this volume will set a standard that will be hard to match whether it is LPD Ltd. or a competitor who tries.
Like much of the graphic material used in Volume 1 & 2 the artwork in Vol. 3 will find its way into decal sets in the not too distant future.
For modellers, detail scale drawings and/or photographs for most of the locomotives outlined in this volume can be found in a number of books and monthly magazines. If the locomotive drawing is not for a Canadian built diesel, it will, with the use of photos of your favourite engine, permit you to modify a commercial model or build one from scratch. The following list is only partial, but will give you a starting place.

There are many additional sources of material which include C.P. Bygones not listed above.
Modellers of Canadian prototypes have been extra lucky this past year, why, well Juneco has brought out several detail items or kits, one of which will make an Athearn SW1500 into a CN or CP SW1200RS or a B.C.H. SW900RS unit. Kit or detail parts include the rare items like winterization hoods, flexicoil truck sideframes, eyebrow number boards, fuel tank modifications, not to mention the spark arresting exhaust castings.
Painting diagram drawings generally in 3/8" = 1'-0" scale, for most of the locomotives shown on the following pages were purchased by the author from C.P. Bygones in Montreal and any modeller can do the same. C.P. Bygones also stocks steam locomotive outline drawings as well. Both items sell for $2.00 a drawing at this writing.
A rather extensive catalog is available outlining all the railroadiana they have to offer.
A large group of modellers and railfans in both Canada and the U.S.A. have assisted the author in researching Vol. 3; while it is not possible to list them all here, several individuals deserve special thanks for their help.
Jim Hope of Trail, B.C., who still roams the central B.C. mountains in search of locomotives to photograph.
Harry Schimm, another B.C. interior photographer and collector provided many pictures of locomotives, though not all were used in this book they verified that many of the paint schemes were actually applied.
Pierre Patenaude who continues to capture most every locomotive he sees, on film.
Colin French, Ron Lipsett and Stan Svihla of the Canadian east as is Sam Jagos while Joe Mazur finds his locomotives in northern B.C.
Ron Sebastian of Buffalo Grove, Illinois provided several EMD paint diagram drawings including that used for the E8A first painting drawing.
Dave Nickerson, formerly of Calgary and now a resident of Canada's evergreen playground, is not only a modeller with a penchant for taking and collecting diesel locomotive photos but a man with a unique extra ability. He not only knows his locomotives but because of a background in the engineering field was able to assist us in checking many of the drawings and data included in this volume.
Jim Shields of C.P. Bygones helped the author go through the corporate archives photo files in search of rare or not otherwise obtainable locomotive photographs.
