INTRODUCTION
This brief introduction describes how RAILBOOK BIBLIOGRAPHY is organized, and what it contains as well as how it can be most easily used. This introduction covers: content, book entry information, use, organization, alternate entries, duplicate treatment, material not covered, errors and suggestion, and abbreviations. Abbreviations are listed separately for quick future reference.
Content-What RRB is.
RAILBOOK BIBLIOGRAPHY is basically a subject indexing and listing of books, government and industry reports, and other publications issued during the 25 year period from 1948 through 1972. The main source of data is the card catalog of the Library of Congress (L. C.) which includes all United States copyright publications as well as other publications not copyrighted but filed by authors, publishers or other libraries for cataloging purposes. Within the railroad field, this covers most books. The major exceptions are books published privately, generally in small quantity, by individuals or railfan groups.
RRB has supplemented the Library of Congress information by reviewing trade publications for reports of new books, and by circulating a questionaire on railroad books to known publishers in the railroad field.
RRB follows the format of the L. C. catalog card for two reasons. First, it is a concise means of presenting the information, and, second, many readers will use RRB as a guide to public library sources.
RRB covers, we believe, almost all of the major books and reports on American railroads of the 1948-1972 period. The only items not included are certain duplicate entries and some highly specialized pamphlets or reports that are difficult to obtain or to locate in libraries. Where small papers or reports constitute a main source of information, they have been included as a basic information resource regardless of their location or length.
RRB is extensively cross-indexed by alternate subject headings to aid the reader in locating matters of interest, and is completely indexed by author and by title.
Book Entry Information-How books are described.
Each main entry in RRB follows the same form as the Library of Congress catalog card, that is: short title, subtitle, author, publication information, collation or physical description, and location code within RRB.
Short Title.
The short title is usually the one used on the cover of the book. In rare cases this may have been shortened by the book cataloger for brevity. In L. C. cards, titles are never capitalized except for the first word in the title or where proper names are used.
Subtitle.
Generally, this is the longer additional title or content description information found on the title page of the book being cataloged. Here, it is important to remember that this is the author's or editor's further description of what the book is about and is not the cataloger's description or critical review of the contents.
In a few cases where the title page does not supply a subtitle, a cataloger may briefly examine the contents to provide a short description of his own.
