INTRODUCTION
This, the first of a new series of books covering the paint schemes of railways operating in North America, the purpose of which is to provide modellers and rail buffs with a graphical and historical reference to the paint work applied to past and present locomotives on many railroads.
Volume one covers the new CN North America paint work as seen in both Canada and the United States as well as the historical paint work seen on the CN divisions in the U.S.; GTW, DT&I, D&TSL, CV, DW&P and the GT (Eastern lines). The SEMTA commuter trains operated by GTW are covered photographically. A brief description of the various corporate groups is given at the beginning of each chapter along with an outline of operations.
The U.S. lines have a truly Canadian flavor, which sets them apart from the rest of the railroad industry in a colorful way. Furthermore, the color schemes of the U.S. lines have reflected both the CN ownership, as well as an independent schema. For example, up until the late 1970s the U.S. lines modern paint work reflected CN corporate colors. First the Green and Gold/Yellow scheme, then the Black Orange and Grey introduced in 1961. DW&P was the only line to adopt the multiple Grey stripe scheme brought in by CN in 1973. GTW, then DW&P opted to continue with the solid color carbody but replaced the Black with a very attracive Blue; this also permitted the possible use of white in place of light Grey on lettering and handrails etc. DW&P also experimented briefly with an all Orange carbody and black roof on RS11s.
CV on the other hand went with a Forest Green and Yellow Scheme. Many units in Blue also turned up on the Central Vermont. Leased RS-1 is from DW&P came in Grey stripe scheme and operated that way for quite some time.
In 1992 the CN North America scheme was introduced and all mainline power began receiving the new map logogram. Yard and general service power less than 3000hp do not have the map, only the CN logo. The U.S. lines have the same scheme plus a set of identifying initials on the cab below the road numbers to retain corporate identity. With this new scheme came variations on the shade of Grey used, there are now two, one lighter on the stripe and logo and a darker Grey on the map. A similar situation now occurs on CP Rail System's Soo Line and Delaware and Hudson railroads, which will be the subject of our next volume in this series.
This book is an attempt to provide the rail enthusiast and modeller with motive power photos and color scheme arrangements and related data. The three U.S. lines operate or have operated virtually every type of train found in North America. The wide assortment of motive power and operations have made the entire Grand Trunk Rail System truly a jewel for study, modelling, teaching about transportation, and for pure enjoyment.
We hope that you will enjoy this book as much as we have had creating it over the past few years.
