India is a living museum for railroad buffs. Fully one-third of the world's remaining steam locomotives still function daily on Indian trackage, with gauges that range from 21/2 feet (762 mm) to 51/2 feet (1676 mm) including a system of slightly less than the British gauge of 31/2 feet (1067 mm)-because the British viceroy, Lord Mayo, preferred 1000 mm, a nice round number in metrics.
India operates the second largest unified train system in the world, transporting more than a billion people every year. Its 60,000 kilometers of track hauls as much freight as the one-third larger system of France, Germany, and Italy combined.
Dutch photographer Paul C. Pet spent five full months traveling the rails of the Indian subcontinent, and he recorded the thrilling sights of a workaday steam railroad system in action-a rare opportunity in this era of diesel and electric locomotion. He traveled in all kinds of carriages-including a palace car-and rode all the standard gauges from the Himalayas down through the tropical south, and from the giant metropolis of Bombay all the way to Rajasthan, where one can still buy a racing camel. Along the way he also photographed the marvels of this ancient land.
English historian Geoffrey Moorhouse has laid the groundwork in his Introduction for an understanding of the visual and textual material that follows by relating the fascinating story of a three-thousand-year cultural and religious tradition.
Brian Hollingsworth concentrates on the history of rail in India, which was a legacy of the British raj. In addition to the history, Mr. Hollingsworth provides all the details on locomotive wheel arrangements, cylinder placement, gauges, signals, bridges, and system interchanges that so delight true rail buffs.
