PREFACE.
This book was not written with the idea that there was not a sufficient number of books of this class on the market, but because it was necessary for one seeking information to make researches that took much of their time, and in these times "Brevity" is the pass-port.
Having been called on by my associates to answer the numerous questions that are presented in the "Examinations" that are now in vogue on the various roads, I determined to place them in book form for their convenience, to the best of my ability.
I am not claiming the originality of the matter contained in this book, and do not wish to be accused of "Plagiarism" as the matter I have compiled herein has been used and printed in other forms before, but not in such a condensed way. It is not the intention of the author to slight anyone in the recognition of their work and if it has been done in these pages he now apologizes for the same.
We wish to give credit to the Traveling Engineers' Association, American Air-Brake Men's Association, and Locomotive Firemen's Magazine for much of the information contained herein, and to our friends A. L. Beardsley, W J. McCarroll, W. G. Wallace and also the Baldwin Locomotive Works, the American Locomotive Works, the Nathan Manufacturing Co., Ohio Injector Co., and Pyle-National Electric Headlight Co.
Trusting that the reader may find some line among these pages that will assist him we beg to conclude by acknowledging that this is not a piece of literary work and we disclaim any attempt at fine writing. Hoping it will fill its mission is the wish Of the AUTHOR.
