Quarterly Newsletter 2020 Spring Vol40 #1 East Broad Top is Back R&LHS
Quarterly News is published by Railway & Locomotive Historical Society.
On our cover, On a November 2, 2019, photo outing, Christopher Brang gives a backup signal to the engine crew of staged East Broad Top 1918 Baldwin 2-8-2 engine No. 17 at Rockhill Furnace, Pa. Stephen Lane is standing in the gangway and Nicholas Brightbill is in the engineer's seat. Lighting provided by Steve Barry and Michael Burkhart. A narrow-gauge short line in central Pennsylvania, EBT has just been brought back to life after its second dormancy. The first took place after it shut down common-carrier operations in 1956 until reopening as a tourist carrier in 1960, and the second in 2011, when the tourist operation was closed pending a long-term solution for the railroad's future. With its original roundhouse, offices, station, and shop complex intact, it is considered to be the most complete extant example of early-20th-century steam railroading, thanks to the foresight of the Kovalchick family, which purchased the line in 1956. Details on Pages 8-11, 16.
