FOREWARD
We are pleased to share with you an album of mostly railroad photographs which reflect a quarter of a century of railroading in America. In the following pages, a tremendous amount of history and evolution is evident. We've taken some 130 of our best photographs, and, assembled them in this album and catalogue. The unusual part about this album is that you can have prints and enlargements made, from the original slides of these photographs, if some strike your eye as worth having for framing, or, for inclusion in your personal collection. And, they are available at reasonable prices, as can be evidenced from a review of the enlargement price list on the following pages.
In the first section, which constitutes most of this album, a collection of railroad photographs beginning from 1959 to present. Some thirty six railroads are represented, and, there are pictures of many passenger trains, and many railroads, which no longer exist. Examples include the Erie - Lackawanna, Penn Central, Nonon, Frisco, New Haven, Rock Island and the Nickel Plate, which have long vanished into railroad history. Of course, with the coming of Amtrak in 1971, almost all railroad operated inter-city passenger service vanished. Within this book are pictures of many of the trains of yesteryear, before Amtrak.
And, there has been a substantial evolution in the type of diesel locomotives built for and used by the railroad industry over the past 25 years. Here, you'll see many of the first generation diesels, and, some of the second and third generation diesels which replaced them. And, you'll even see a few steam locomotives.
Lastly, in the second section of the book, there are a handful of scenic pictures which we've taken over the years.
We've published the book in this spiral bound, rather informal form to keep the price within your easy range. We invite you to browse through the pages and reflect back on a quarter of a century of railroading.
John W. Gohmann, August, 1983
