Puffing Pioneers and Queenslands Railway Builders By Viv Daddow Dust Jacket
The Puffing Pioneers and Queenslands Railway Builders By Viv Daddow Dust Jacket 1975 Ex-Library BOOK 217 Pages
The lure which Queensland's century of steam held for so many has never been satisfactorily answered by the diesel locomotive. Although many detractors have referred to this State's railway system as a "pony" or "toy" railway, the enthusiasm and pleasure which Queensland's steam trains could engender is here shown in Viv Daddow's enthusiastic, humorous and at times highly partisan history.
Viv Daddow joined the Queensland Railways in 1916 as a locomotive cleaner. From this beginning he worked his way up to become a fireman, and later qualified as a driver. From 1940 until retirement in 1964, Viv was Southern District Secretary of the Australian n Id). He thus writes from vast store of personal knowledge.
The first half century of steam was, naturally, taken up largely with the actual building of the railways - both tracks end with the various governments who helped or hindered this progress. The hardships the navvies underwent in remote centres, the constant threat of being laid off when the job was complete, and the political intrigues and scandals which pushed the rails over so much of this vast State are all recalled here.
The second half of the history, dealing more with the workers and their continuing fights for a better deal, of necessity takes on a more personal as the author's own experiences al emotions are woven into the story world wars, numerous strikes and stop work threats, and the Great Depression on make the second fifty years of the Rail-way's history a fast-moving and lively commentary.
More than a history of the Railways, the progress and growth of Queensland are the background to this story of The Puffing Pioneers and Queensland's Railway Builders. Viv Daddow's years of employment read like a compendium of the Queensland in addition loco cleaner, fireman, and driver, the author has always been deeply involved in the Australian Railways Union. In 1934 he was elected by north Queensland railwaymen to vist Soviet Russia and on his return he toured the State addressing meetings of railwaymen and the general public on his experiences.
Secretary of the Southern District of the Australian Railways Union, a member of the Union's State Council and Federal Council, delegate to the Australian Council of Trade Unions, the author has attended and addressed meetings in every state of the Commonwealth.
Now retired and living in Bundaberg with his wife, Viv Daddow has one son, and one daughter, six grand-children and eight great grand-children.
