INTRODUCTION
The construction of a model railway layout can give the builder a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction, but this is by no means all that the hobby has to offer. Operation of the completed layout in a realistic manner, following the principles of real railway practice, can provide continuing interest and entertainment for the enthusiast and his or her friends. Many modellers never realise the full potential of this aspect of the hobby and their running is merely haphazard. My aim in this book is to show the beginner how even a small and simple model railway can be operated in an interesting and realistic manner. There are various methods of running a model railway and we will look at the basic principles of some of these so that you can choose the one most suitable for you and your layout.
If the modeller is to gain the maximum pleasure from operating his layout it is essential that the model railway should run smoothly and reliably. For a layout to operate properly regular maintenance and repairs are required. Many beginners are uncertain just how to go about keeping their layouts and equipment in good order, and also feel that such work is likely to be a tedious chore anyway. However, for the most part, simple care and maintenance that you can easily carry out yourself is all that is needed and I will cover these basic procedures in this book.
