DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
In the six years preceding his death in 1966, Lucius Beebe climaxed a 40-year career in journalism with a weekly column for The San Francisco Chronicle; which was once beautifully described as "a weekly explosion of brimstone". Many of these colorful essays have been collected in this book as the outspoken commentary of a highly civilized 19th Century gentleman at odds with the mass conformity and mediocrity of the society he saw about him.
In this age of bland journalism, Mr. Beebe's opinions rang loud and clear, and his capacity for inventive epithet was unsurpassed as he fearlessly flailed every sacred American institution of our times.
He despised most newspapers, airlines, organized religion, easy credit and installment buying, the innumerable trashy products that clutter the market place, and plastics in any form. The graduated income tax, he believed, was solely a device for despoiling the thrifty for the benefit of the shiftless mob. All other government programs he considered vast swindles designed to buy votes and assure their authors a permanent place at the public trough. The University of California, the Democratic Party, labor unions and the entire Detroit automotive industry were favorite targets for his deadly barbs.
He was convinced that the civil rights movement was the bogus creation of Negro confidence men abetted by hysterical and incompetent editors. He was outraged by political columnists who lived high on the hog through their ability to terrorize the public with threats of doom via The Bomb, fallout, starvation, lung cancer and pollution of all kinds.
It has been said that the opposite of love is not hate but indifference. As you read these collected essays by the opinionated Mr. Beebe, you will love him or hate him, but rest assured indifference is one emotion you will not experience.
Beebe took time off from these exhausting encounters to travel the country in a $325,000 private railroad car with his 185-pound St. Bernard, T-Bone Towser.
In 1960, Beebe and Clegg sold the Territorial Enterprise. And that same year, Beebe began his column, "This Wild West," for The San Francisco Chronicle.
Always prolific, Beebe found time to write some 35 books, many of them in collaboration with Clegg. In recent years, the two authors had concentrated on a series of historical works on railroading.
The preceding is reprinted from The San Francisco Chronicle, Saturday, February 5, 1966, in a front-page story which began:
"Lucius Beebe, who was larger than life, is dead.
"The 63-year-old author, journalist, historian, raconteur, gourmet and bon vivant extraordinary suffered a heart attack shortly after his ritual morning turkish bath in his Hillsborough winter home yesterday."
