PREFACE
These drafting standards have been prepared for the use of the Engineering forces of the Providence District and follow the policies, training regulation, conventions, etc., set forth in the orders and regulations, training manuals and other authoritative sources.
The large volume of drawings in this district and the training of draftsmen unfamiliar with U. S. Engineer Department standards makes it essential that everyone concerned with the production of drawings know the requirements fully and produce plans as nearly as possible, uniform in delineation. Clear, accurate, legible drawings are an invaluable aid to the engineer, the Contractor and the inspector. Correct and instant recognition of symbols used is a necessity. The field or office employees should not be required to remember more than one set of drafting symbols. It is considered necessary, therefore, that all Providence District drawing conform to the standards herein set forth.
These drafting standards were compiled in the Engineering Division of the Providence District Office, by K. B. Woodworth, Head of the Drafting Section under the direction of T. S. Burns, Chief of Engineering Division, and the District Engineer. Contributions to the complement of this edition by other sections, project units, former heads of the drafting section and by various individual employees is gratefully acknowledged.
