Progressive Railroading 1984 July Railroad Research more to it Than Ever Before
Progressive Railroading is published monthly. Vol27 #7. The cover : Research doesn't need sparkling new tools to be effective. Proof of that is the AAR's "new" powerful dynamometer at the Chicago Research Center where the unit's distinguished record of service in testing via application of vertical and lateral loadings is especially valued.
Built by Adamson-United of Akron for automobile wheel testing, it was sold in 1955 to U.S. Steel's Monroeville, Pa. research laboratory, which adapted it for testing railroad wheels. Now, the new owners can hardly wait to get it going on accelerated wheel and brake shoe wear testing.
AAR research also has become far more than the accelerated wear testing work indicated here, as vital as that is. Two special articles, beginning on pages 20 and 28, give more details.

Railroad Research ... More To it Than Ever Before 20
What needs to be sought out via research is that which can add new dimensions to the massiveness and grandeur of rail transportation. It has come to mean locomotives that haul more using less fuel, freight cars that carry more and last longer, and track that maintains its integrity. More, however, must be known about fundamentals that have come to be taken for granted
AAR Research in Expanding Role 28
It has only been since 1982 that the railroads, under leadership of the AAR, have been able to focus attention on specific problems affecting the operation of trains. Two occurrences were pivotal: the takeover by the industry of the activities at the Transportation Test Center at Pueblo. and the concurrent development of a five-year plan for research. These were instrumental in changing the direction of the research effort in favor of an emphasis on energy savings, but it also sought to determine how improvements in the performance of basic systems affect productivity
Partners on CN ... Section Gang and Geometry Car 36
In order to restore the section gang to "its rightful place" as the number one weapon in track maintenance, CN Rail has recently reorganized its forces. The effort had become overshadowed by the huge track-replacement machines and their concept of high productivity track renewal. But the day-to-day job will now be reemphasized as section gang responsibility as assisted by a wholly new concept in geometry car technology
High Promise of Track Lubrication 39
The railroads are ready to declare that the practice of lubricating track not only reduces wear and tear of rails and wheels, but it also pays off handsomely in energy (fuel) savings. All that remains to confirm these findings on a scientific basis are additional tests
End-of-Train Monitor Update 41
Union Switch 8 Signal division of American Standards response to the call to eliminate the caboose was to develop a train telemetry system to warn enginemen of changes in brakepipe pressure. After much industry discussion, rules of standardization were agreed upon and the company has now concluded extensive field tests of a refined, two-watt UHF system that it is confident will perform satisfactorily
Faster Turnarounds at Sioux City 43
When PLM Railcar Maintenance Co.'s car cleaning facility was destroyed by fire in 1982, it could have been viewed as a catastrophe. Instead, the company turned the disaster into an opportunity, not merely replacing the building, but including state-of-the-art cleaning equipment and a more efficient entrance and exit design as well
BN Tests Fuel-Saving Switchers 45
Two switching locomotives, leased to the Burlington Northern last fall, hauled more tonnage than larger units assigned to the same duties. In a special instrumented test, it was determined that the switchers accomplished the job with significant savings in fuel
