FOREWORD
I am happy to write a foreword to Mr. Kingdom's `History of the Princetown Railway', especially since much of the land it traversed belonged to my family.
There can be few short stretches of country which can equal this in beauty and variation of scenery. The line after leaving Yelverton and passing through Dousland, emerged on to Dartmoor, winding its way round Foggintor to Princetown.
My Grandfather often drove his carriage and pair from Maristow to catch the train, putting up his horses at the stables adjacent to the Station Master's house. A leisurely way of travelling no doubt, and far more relaxing than competing with crowded motorways and the difficulties of parking in modern times.
It was a great pity that this line could not have been kept open by some private Company, but the upkeep no doubt would have proved too expensive.
Many people, including my family, gathered together to ride on this train the day before the line closed and we all bemoaned its passing, but we had done very little before that to justify its retention.
Now it has passed into history and I have no doubt it will be faithfully recorded in the pages that follow, and remain of great interest to many people.
