FOREWORD
The history of the railways of Great Britain is one of progressive amalgamation. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the small unlinked pioneer systems joined up to form a number of important railways possessing through routes. These enlarged themselves by absorbing lesser lines until they reached a peak of prosperity before 1914. The Great War, and the rise of mechanical road transport, produced problems which could only be resolved by the major reorganisation known as the 'grouping', which resulted in the formation of four main railways. This took effect fifty years ago, and it was decided to commemorate this event in a special exhibition at the Science Museum.
The fiftieth anniversary of the grouping coincided with the twenty-fifth anniversary of nationalisation. It also came at a time when the National Railway Museum at York was being actively planned. For these reasons a new publication was felt to be timely, one dealing with railway history in a way which related to the collection to be displayed at York. This volume is the first part of it.
The Museum is indebted to Professor Jack Simmons of the University of Leicester and to Col. T. M. Simmons of the Science Museum for their help with suggestions and proof reading.
