INTRODUCTION
Introduction
It is now 21 years since "Clun Castle" made her epic, record-breaking run from Plymouth to Bristol - 21 years which span the end of the Steam Age, the shrinkage of the railway network, the growth of the railway preservation movement and the triumphant return of main line steam working by a select band of locomotives. This booklet has been produced to celebrate this anniversary and to serve as a history of the engine's career culminating in its heavy overhaul during 1984/85 prior to reentering main line service.
We are indebted to all the photographers whose work appears in these pages and to Richard Cadge, Jack Trounson and other enthusiasts who have contributed their knowledge to the compilation of the text. But most of all, our thanks should go to the West Midlands County Council and Warley College of Technology for financial and material assistance to enable "Clun Castle's" overhaul to take place and, not least, the Museum staff who made it possible. The record-breaker is back!
This booklet was designed by Ray Russell and Roger Crombleholme at the Museum.
