Throughout its history, the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad was known affectionately as the "Little Giant". This was quite possibly the most accurate nickname ever given to one of our nation's railroads. Although the P&LE was relatively small in route miles, the amount of traffic moved over its rails was not. According to company documents, the railroad operated 1/10th of one-percent of the nation's rails in 1978, but quite amazingly moved over one percent of the nation's tonnage. In this book we explore the independent years of the P&LE from the late 1970's till its sale in 1992.
