To say the Pittsburg, Shawmut & Northern was not a very glamorous railroad would be an understatement to say the least. It really did not run anywhere in particular. The Shawmut, as it was referred to by many, never touched upon any large metropolitan areas, nor did it connect any towns that were not already linked together by long established networks such as the Erie or the Pennsy. I suppose you could say that the Shawl-nut's only lay to fame was the fact that it was in receivership practically from its conception to the day it finally went out of business.
But there was this certain undefinable atmosphere about the old Shawmut, call it romance if you will. This cantankerous, antiquated little railroad, which was really not so little, stretched into two states and totaled over two hundred miles. Even for its size this railroad still maintained the friendly, quaint and extraordinary qualities often found in the shortest of railroads.
In the pages to follow we will try to recapture the atmosphere lent by the Shawmut and preserve it within the bounds of this book to be related to its readers for years to come.
