It has long been recognised that if we are to understand a people we must first understand its history. However, it is not so widely appreciated that before this history can be read and understood it must first be researched and written.
This is why I welcome your invitation to provide a foreword to this booklet. It gives me the opportunity to applaud these people, both within your society and without, who have unselfishly contributed their time to assist in its preparation.
The lot of an historian, a researcher, is an exacting one. Answers to the many questions of "when, why and how" are frequently elusive. Sometimes days of poring over dusty documents and records, or long trips to seek out old identities, are necessary before a short, but always vital, paragraph can be completed.
Today New Zealand stands at an historical crossroads. Much of our history is in the living memory of many. Consequently it is not quite sanctified and hallowed with the emotive hoariness in which the happenings of earlier years are trapped. Frequently events are not treated with the respect they deserve. Old records are destroyed, documents lost. If a check to this is not made soon, much of the quality of our historical heritage will be lost.
Fortunately, however, we have people of the calibre of those who have produced this booklet to see that this heritage is not lost. I therefore commend them, and their work, to the many, both now and in the future, who will read the Pioneer Electrics.
