ON THE BACK COVER
When visionaries plotted how to move goods west from Boston in the early 1800s, they found an almost perfect route to New York State. There was only one problem-the massive bulk of Hoosac Mountain stood in the way.
A Pinprick of Light details the epic struggle between man and mountain that led to one of the wonders of our time-the Hoosac Tunnel. Promoters and contractors overcame primitive civil engineering techniques, brutal political battles, and nearly five miles of hard rock and oozing mud to ultimately bore North America's longest tunnel. Author Carl Byron reveals the compelling stories behind the personal and technical misadventures, fatal disasters, and triumphs that led to the tunnel's completion.
A Pinprick of Light also covers more than a century of train operations in and around the tunnel. Running dozens of steam engines through the bore each day was an ordeal at best. The unrelieved darkness and mind-numbing fumes made every trip a life-threatening adventure. Electricity, then diesel power, improved conditions dramatically, but the "Great Bore" remains to this day a dark, fascinating place, where the only sign of the outside world is a pinprick of light, miles away.
