Foreword
One of the best known of all mountains is the Pilatus, characterized by its towering pyramid of rocks. It is the symbol of the city of Lucerne, and by its imposing aspect dominates the whole country around the lake of the Four Cantons (Lake of Lucerne).
Mount Pilatus is high, bold and majestic. Nature here is magnificent, particularly as revealed in the many-coloured mountain flora. The view from the crenelated ridge of Mount Pilatus, over a great expanse of Switzerland reaching from the snow-capped chain of Alps, to the Vosges and the Black Forest, leaves a lasting impression. The unique view of Lucerne and its lake is alone an unrivalled attraction. To enjoy such splendours, hundreds of thousands have climbed these heights during the centuries, braving fatigue and danger. For us, the effort has been lessened: the Mount Pilatus Railway takes us to the very summit of this proud mountain. And now this line, opened on June 4th, 1889, and at that time one of the wonders of the world, has reached its fiftieth year. Thanks to its electrification, which was carried out with great success in 1936-1937 and provided the line with entirely new rolling-stock the Pilatus-Railway has added to its earlier fame. Its attraction even in the days of steam locomotives was great; today, the ascension of Mount Pilatus in an electric train is an experience unequalled anywhere and which the visitor to Central Switzerland should not miss.
On June 4th, 1939, fifty years will have passed since the Mount Pilatus Railway was opened. On this occasion, we present in the following pages a short review of the working of the line, the various historical peculiarities of Mount Pilatus, and a technical appendix on the electrification work carried out in 1937. We hope this little pamphlet may increase the popularity of the Pilatus in the whole world and attract to Switzerland, as well as to Mount Pilatus itself, an even greater stream of visitors from all nations.
