ON THE BACK COVER
Old Philadelphia may no longer exist, but you can recapture some of its remarkable charm in these 24 views dating from 1859 to 1924. These rare photographs are reproduced here in the form of actual postcards that you can detach and mail, or keep as authentic records of the city's past.
Printed in duotone on 6 leaves of perforated card stock, these picture postcards show many famous buildings and sites: Independence Hall in 1910, the famed Academy of Music (showing posters for a recital by Rachmaninoff) in 1924, the Walnut Street Theatre (America's oldest theater in continuous use) in 1868, Rittenhouse Square in 1890, Chestnut Street ca. 1890, Society Hill in 1859, East River Drive in 1893, John Wanamaker's first department store in 1902, etc. Of special interest are two postcards showing Philadelphia's Centennial Exposition in 1876: the Art Gallery, later known as Memorial Hall, on the opening day of the Exposition (May 10), and the hand and torch of Bartholdi's uncompleted Statue of Liberty.
Each view is identified on the reverse, where there is also space for your postcard greeting and mail address. A grand collection of views of old Philadelphia in an unusual and convenient format, this book offers a unique way to keep in touch with friends and relatives, as well as with the city as it once was.
