ON THE BACK COVER
Pre-modern Boston - the city of ships, Puritans and aristocrats - left an indelible mark on the American imagination. You can recapture some of its unique mixture of elegance and commerce in these 24 views dating from around 1850 to 1920. These rare photographs are reproduced here in the form of actual postcards that you can detach and mail, or keep as authentic records of the city's past.
Printed in duotone on 6 leaves of perforated card stock, these picture postcards show famous buildings and sites: Copley Square during the 1902 visit of Prince Henry of Prussia, Old South Meeting House-a famous Revolutionary site, Old North Church where legend has it that two lanterns in its tower warned Paul Revere of the approaching British, the Howard Athenaeum - later fondly remembered as the "Old Howard" burlesque house, Scollay Square, Washington Street, historic Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, the Massachusetts State House before the addition of the present wings, the ruins of Pearl Street after the great Boston fire of 1872, and 15 more!
Each view is identified on the reverse, where there is also space for your postcard greeting and mail address. A grand collection of views of pre-modern Boston in an unusual and convenient format, this book offers a unique way to keep in touch with friends and relatives, as well as with the city that once was.
