DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The Somerset & Dorset was a railway which evoked strong passions-whether of affection or derision. Its closure in 1966 under the Beeching plan was fiercely opposed and bitterly regretted. Robin Atthill has planned this Picture History to be complementary to his earlier book in the Railway History Series, published in 1967 and reprinted in 1968. In a varied collection of about 150 pictures he presents a balanced portrait of the line from its earliest days to its closure and afterwards.
There are sections on the line in its joint days before and after World War I, on Highbridge works, on shipping activities and industrial branches, and on the men who worked on the Dorset'. Boxrooms and family albums have contributed their quota of old photographs, many of them never previously reproduced in book form. Nearly half the book depicts the line since World War II with all its scenic variety and unique interest for the railway enthusiast. The S & D was supremely photogenic, and the work of many of the best known railway photographers is represented here: Dr T. F. Budden, H. C. Casserley and W. Vaughan-Jenkins; Derek Cross, R. C. Riley and above all No Peters, doyen of S & D photographers since 1945, to whose unrivalled collection the author had access, and who himself contributes a ten-page section entitled One Man's View'.
