PREFACE
In the October 1945 issue of the Baltimore and Ohio Magazine we started a series of articles, which were to appear monthly, on "The Motive Power of the B & 0." Just like all "best-laid plans," this schedule was often interrupted by other and more urgent matters so that, instead of a two-year project, the last article appeared in August 1950, almost five years after the first was printed.
From the very beginning we received so many requests for the issues containing these articles that the supply of extra copies was soon exhausted. It was because of this demand that we decided to reprint these articles in one book. However, the many changes occurring in the railroad motive-power picture during the past five years impelled us to rework most of the material, bringing it up-to-date and deleting obsolete references. The picture changes from month to month. Older locomotives are retired. New locomotives are placed in service. They are shifted from one division to another as traffic and other conditions require. Therefore, in this book we have generally deleted references to divisional assignments.
We have also added a chapter on the very early locomotives, all too brief, which we felt was necessary for a fuller understanding of the reasons why various types of locomotives progressively were placed in service on the B & 0 during the past century and a quarter.
No effort has been made to fully cover locomotives that came from other railroads which were absorbed into the B & 0 system. That would make a book in itself.
This book has been written to order for historians, railfans and model builders to satisfy the long-felt need for authoritative information on the subject of Baltimore and Ohio locomotives - their development and their design.
From little Tom Thumb in 1830 through the grasshoppers, mud-diggers, crabs and camels up to the great Mallets, Hudsons, Santa Fe's and diesels of a more recent day the history of the motive power of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad has truly been the history of the development of the locomotive in America. Here in this volume that fascinating story is told in word and picture by Lawrence W. Sagle, the country's leading authority on the history of B & 0 motive power.
Almost from the time of its founding a hundred and twenty-five years ago right up to the present day the B 0 has been an ardent pioneer in developing and perfecting the right locomotive to do a particular job. How well the railroad has succeeded can be judged best by the fact that today the B & 0 is recognized in railroad circles throughout the country as being a leader in efficient, reliable railroading.
Words alone could not tell how this all came about, but when joined with dozens of handsome photographs from the archives of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad the combination becomes a collector's item of American railroadiana. It is a book that is at once as informative as it is interesting and as striking pictorially as it is historically authoritative.
All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
