DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
This standard reference work covering the locomotives of the Great Western Railway was first published in 1975 as two volumes. In 1978 the work was reprinted by popular demand in a combined edition, and again by popular demand it is re-issued as originally conceived in two separate parts. Volume One deals with the Great Western locomotives designed by Daniel Gooch, Joseph Armstrong and William Dean and their subsequent development, whilst Volume Two covers those locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward, Charles Benjamin Collett and Frederick William Hawksworth.
The work comprises a collection of photographs, line drawings and sketches (many taken directly from official Swindon originals) and is intended to portray the evolution of the engines of the Great Western Railway. The author has arranged the work chronologically with scale diagrams accompanying the photographs and he includes a detailed commentary on the locomotive classes. In addition, wherever possible, variations to individual members of a class are highlighted.
Whilst the work does not claim to be a complete history of the Great Western Engines, it is a fascinating pictorial record in photographs and drawings of locomotive development on the GWR. (The historic documentation of the subject is fully detailed in the authoritative RCTS series Locomotives of the Great Western Railway).
Volume Two contains over 600 drawings and photographs and includes such notable designs as the 'Bulldog, 'Castle', 'City', 'County', 'Grange', 'Hall', 'King', 'Manor', 'Saint', and 'Star' classes.
The two volumes are a companion to the author's A Pictorial Record of Great Western Absorbed Engines.
