In May 1675, a sorrowful group of followers laid Father Jacques Marquette to his final rest in a spot near the mouth of the river that now bears his name.
Few white men passed that way again until the second half of the nineteenth century.
In the late 1840's and early 50's settlers began to clear and build on the land that later became Mason County. Corking by wagon, on foot and by occasional schooner, they built mills, stores homes and began the lumbering era.
As more families arrived small settlements grew into towns. Among these was the village of Pere Marquette, built on the shores 3f Lake Michigan across the river from the burial place of Father Marquette and named in his honor.
By 1859 rumors of the building of a railroad across the sta+e, from Flint to this lake shore village, had reached as far as Wisconsin and a civic minded group was organized to make a trip across Lake Michigan to investigate the possibilities of cross lake shipping.
The following is an account of their trip, taken from the Manitowoc Pilot for July 22, 1859.
Excursion to Pere Marquette-On board the steamer GAZELLE-Friday, July 15, 9 P.M.
Having reached the deck of the Gazelle-now laying at the pier of Johnson & Hodges-a little before her time of starting, let us pencil down the cause of our visit to her at this time.
Through the exertions of several gentlemen of Manitowoc, an Excursion party has been formed during the week, and arrangements having been made with Capt. Butlin, he is now awaiting the arrival of his precious load.
Our destination is Pere Marquette, across the lake-a point but little known except as on the map of the State of Michigan. The projectors of the Manitowoc and Mississippi Railroad have always, we believe, looked favorably upon this point as one terminus of a Ferry which would connect our village with the Flint and Pere Marquette Road, and thus with Detroit and all Eastern Cities.
But the beauty and fashion of Manitowoc have already arrived, and the crowd of friends and acquaintances who come to bid "Good Bye" is very large. Our friend Hodges has turned Steward for the present, and is actively engaged in furnishing rooms to all the ladies. He does his duty well-his motto being "Ladies first-Gentle-men afterwards."
In the after cabin a company of darkies from Milwaukee have already posted themselves on the table-music starts-and with the music the light tread of many feet. This is kept up for nearly two hours ere the last "Whistle" sounded-a warning to outsiders that the plank is to be Ali ed in, and that the Gazelle will in a few moments start for the deep waters of Lake Michigan, bearing a load of more precious freight than silver and gold. May a good Providence return this valuable treasure to the sight of those who will await with an anxious eye and throbbing heart the presence of those who are dearest to them on earth. Fond parents, and brothers and sisters, and perhaps lovers, are now praying for calm seas and
