DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
A lavishly illustrated, colorful chronicle of the Hoosier state and the people who made it great. Over 900 photographs, maps, and drawings and a lively accompanying text relate the fascinating history of Indiana-from the earliest-known cultures through the gleam of modern industry to the space age. The vast collection of pictures has been gathered from individuals and the archives of colleges and universities, businesses, libraries, and newspapers.
A Pictorial History of Indiana portrays the richness of Indiana's heritage; the beauty of its rivers, forests, and the wealth of its natural resources. The book depicts the many Indian tribes that inhabited the state and chronicles the tribulations and joys of the pioneer settlers during the territorial and early statehood days. It conveys the excitement of the Revolutionary period, describes the exploits of George Rogers Clark, and features the early settlements of Fort Ouiatenon, Vincennes, New Harmony, and Fort Miamis (now Fort Wayne). Hundreds of personal, candid photographs-a veritable family album-show the participation of Hoosiers in the Civil War and two world wars, the progress of education from one-room schoolhouses to a diversity of colleges and universities, countryside homes and pastimes, and the gradual growth of towns and cities, stores, and factories.
Dwight Hoover highlights the vital commercial developments made by the Ball Brothers, the engineering innovations of Studebaker and Cummins, and the pharmaceutical accomplishments of Eli Lilly. The growth of the Hoosier state into an important industrial center is traced through the giant petroleum refineries and steel mills of Whiting, Gary, and Hammond as well as the bustling ports on Lake Michigan and the shipyards of Madison, Evansville, and New Albany on the Ohio River. Unique to the state, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is portrayed throughout its daring history of automotive development and world-class driving achievements.
Pictorial History abounds with photographs of famous Hoosiers-authors Theodore Dreiser, Booth Tarkington, James Whitcomb Riley, Ernie Pyle, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.; composers Paul Dresser, Cole Porter, and Hoagy Carmichael; politicians Oliver P. Morton, Eugene V. Debs, Wendell Willkie, and Richard Hatcher; and other personalities such as Elwood Haynes, Richard Lieber, W. G. Irwin, and John Wooden. Famous Hoosier landmarksGrouseland (home of William Henry Harrison), the Lanier mansion, the William Conner home, and the boyhood home of Abraham Lincoln-are also featured.
A Pictorial History of Indiana is a faithful, illustrated chronicle of the state's history-a memorable account of places, events, and individual Hoosiers, both the famous and the unknown, who have made Indiana a state of distinction.
