Winter and derailments
Snowplowing and train wrecks. One was an annual fact of life for snow afflicted railroads and was a difficult operational chore while the other was the unexpected happenstance which could result in loss of limb or life and required skills to restore the equipment to running condition.
Of interest on the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes is the fact that in the 10 months from September 1911 to June 1912, 5030 locomotive miles were used for snow fighting and 274 miles for wreck service, out of a total of 149,119 total locomotive miles operated in that time period. In the year ending June 1913, the snow miles were 2589, and the wreck miles 122 out of 195,354, and in 1914, wrecking 412 miles, snow 3955, out of 196,440.
