DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The saga of America's western frontier has an endless fascination. Countless stories, both fact and fiction, have been told of the heroism, drama, and tragedy of the settlement of the West. Among the least-known heroes of the frontier are the pioneer photographers, whose work appears-usually without credit-in every American history book. The invention of photography virtually coincided with the opening of the West, and for the first time in history an era was recorded as it actually happened, for later generations to see.
Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler have brought together the biographies and pictures of a large number of the photographers of the frontier. Beginning in the 1840s when the first photographers ventured west with government exploration parties, their story tells of the men and women who trained cameras on the construction of the railroads, the Indian wars, and the building of frontier settlements. More than fifty original photographs-sometimes taken under unbelievably difficult conditions- provide a fascinating look at the frontier as the pioneers saw it.
